Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Know Before Hiring a Commercial Mural Artist?

These are the questions I get most often from commercial clients. If something isn’t covered here, the contact form is at the bottom of the page.

How much does a mural cost?

Starting price is $3,000. From there, cost is determined by the size of the wall, the style, and the location. Full pricing and style breakdowns are on the Mural Pricing and Styles page.

How long does it take to paint a mural?

It depends on the size of the wall, the style, the number of colors, and whether it’s a solo project or a collaboration. A 10×10 Grid in one color with one brush typically runs 5 to 6 hours. More complex styles take longer. See the styles page for a breakdown of what each style involves.

Do I need a design?

No. Most of my work is freestyle — point me at a wall and I’ll work with what’s there. If you have colors in mind, tell me. If you don’t, I’ll look at the space and tell you what will work. You can also give me words, phrases, or messages to embed in the piece. That’s part of what calligraffiti does.

Can I choose the colors?

Yes. If a combination won’t work on the wall, I’ll tell you and we’ll find something that does.

What surfaces can you paint on?

Drywall, concrete, brick, and wood all work. The surface affects prep time and how paint adheres, but it doesn’t limit what’s possible. If you’re unsure about your wall, send a photo and I’ll tell you what I’m working with.

Do I need to close during painting?

No. I work around your business. Some clients take it a step further and build an event around it — live art being created while customers are in the space. The mural becomes part of the experience before it’s even finished.

Do murals need maintenance?

Interior murals hold up for years without any upkeep. Exterior murals take more wear — UV exposure and weather will eventually affect the paint. A protective sealer applied at the end of the project extends the life significantly. Touch-ups are straightforward if you ever need them.

Can you incorporate my logo?

Yes. Logo work is quoted separately from the mural because it’s a different process — I use a projector to ensure accuracy. If you want both, I can handle both.

Do you work on ceilings?

Yes. Floors too.

Do you travel outside Southern California?

Yes. Orange County, Los Angeles, and the Inland Empire are included in base pricing. Projects outside Southern California are quoted with a travel fee.

What should I have ready to get a quote?

Wall dimensions (width and height), the location, the surface type, and a photo of the space. That’s enough for me to give you an accurate number.

Are permits required?

For exterior murals on public-facing walls, yes — some cities require a permit. Requirements vary by city and property type. I’d recommend checking with your local planning or public works department before the project starts. Interior murals typically don’t require permits.
